U-18 MNT Fall to River Plate 3-2 in Final Match of Argentina Tour

CHICAGO (May 31, 2004) - The U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team took a two-goal lead after the first 45 minutes, but U-20 River Plate was able to mount a come-from-behind win, scoring three goals in the second half to take the 3-2 victory on Monday, May 31 at the River Plate training grounds.

The U.S. got off to a quick start, finding the back of the net in the 10th minute. Ely Allen was able to put home a service from midfielder Rich Costanzo to give the U.S. the early lead.

At the 29th minute, the U.S. doubled the lead when two recent U.S. Soccer Residency graduates combined on the next goal. Danny Szetela found Nathan Sturgis, who was able to beat the 'keeper with his shot and the U.S. looked to be in a good position going into halftime.

The second half was a different story though, as River Plate was able to get behind the U.S. backline and put three goals past goalkeeper Stephen Sandbo in the 50th, 62nd and 67th minute to cap off a remarkable comeback.

The match was the last for the U.S. during their Argentina tour. In earlier matches, they fell to Argentina U-18 MNT 2-1, and tied Boca Juniors U-20 1-1.
