Reyna Announces Retirement from Professional Soccer
NEW YORK (July 16, 2008) -- Former U.S. National Team captain and New York Red Bulls midfielder, Claudio Reyna has announced his retirement from professional soccer after a fourteen-year career. He plans to continue his involvement with RBNY as an ambassador to the sport, developing relations with the metropolitan New York area.

Reyna’s professional career included time spent overseas with numerous European squads — Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Glasgow Rangers, Sunderland and Manchester City — and in 2007, he started his Major League Soccer career when he joined the Red Bulls as a designated player.

He played in 31 World Cup qualifying games during his career and represented the United States at the 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups. He also played in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics Games.

He retired from the Men’s National Team after the USA’s elimination from the 2006 FIFA World Cup with 112 caps and eight goals. He is the only American man in history to have been named to the FIFA World Cup All-Star First Team.
