U.S. Under-20s Fall in Shootout to Finish in Third in Group 2 at Milk Cup

BALLYMONEY, Northern Ireland (July 22, 2004) - The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team fell 4-2 in a shootout to Denmark to determine which team would finish second and third in the Group 2 standings at the Northern Ireland Milk Cup. Denmark will now face Russia in the 3rd/4th Place match, while the U.S. will play Northern Ireland in the 5th/6th Place match. Both games will be played on Friday, July 23.

The U.S. and Denmark both tied all three of their group matches, including a 2-2 draw with each other, and ended up even on all tiebreakers. The teams met at the Ballymoney Fairgrounds at noon today to determine how the standings would look.

Denmark shot first and made their first three attempts past U.S. goalkeeper Quentin Westberg. Charlie Davies made the first shot for the U.S., but Kiel McClung shot wide on the team's second attempt. Karl Schilling kept the USA's chances alive by burying the third attempt, and then Westberg came up with a huge save on Denmark's fourth shot to give the U.S. a chance to tie it up. Unfortunately, Will John's shot was saved and Denmark scored on their fifth attempt to give them the win.
