A small but crafty midfielder with great vision and a deft touch on the ball, McCarty plays bigger than his 5-7 stature. Fighting for every ball that comes his way, the diminutive midfielder earned himself a consistent spot in the starting lineup for FC Dallas in 2007. McCarty was a big part of the U.S. Under-20 MNT during their quarterfinal run at the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup. He appeared in the midfield in all five games, and showed his toughness and versatility when he was forced to play left back for the second half and extra time of the team’s Round of 16 win over Uruguay.
