To assist all users in their database usage, we have partnered with Demosphere to provide all US Soccer members with helpful information and tips. We will update and add to this section on a regular basis. If at anytime, you have questions, suggestions or perhaps just need a helping hand on a problem, call or e-mail Boyd Reilly at 703-536-1600 ext. 27 or boyd@demosphere.com
Here is an initial listing of some helpful tips to assist all users in their database activities:
- For starters, you have heard it 100 times already, but do backups regularly. It is a good idea to make sure you have one current backup at another location (at home or at your office, for example). Backups insure you have secure data in case of a computer failure and an off-site back-up gives you protection in case of a fire or any other catastrophe.
- For help doing backups, visit www.pkware.com and download the latest version of PKZIP® or WINZIP®.
- A CD is an inexpensive means to transport and store data and other important computer information. A CD can hold over 600 megabytes of data and is usable on almost every computer. CD-Writers are needed to make CD storage, and they are relatively inexpensive, retailing for as little as $125.
- Are your network and computers safe from electronic failure and power surges? An inexpensive UPS costs less than $100 and can keep your system up for a half hour and safely shut down your system.
- To avoid Y2K problems or confusion, keep your dates in four-digit year format (MM/DD/YYYYY.)
- If you keep all your records in one database be sure to designate record types to each record (eg. P=player, C=coach, etc.)
- Anti-virus software is no longer an option; it is imperative to have anti-virus software to ensure the safety of your data. www.symantec.com and www.mcafee.com offer two of the more popular anti-virus software on the market.
- Never open an email attachment from an unknown source or an attachment of a suspicious nature.
- Password protect your computer. Just because you enter a password when the computer is turned on doesn’t mean your computer is protected. Add screen saver password for when you walk away or leave the computer on overnight. |
