The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for persons eight years of age and older with mental retardation, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Soccer is one of 25 sports offered worldwide. In addition to traditional 11-a-sided soccer events, Special Olympics offers competition in 5-a-side soccer, unified sports, and individual skills. Unified Sports teams allow for athletes to participate in sports activities with their non-disabled peers. Unified Sports Teams are comprised of equal numbers of Special Olympics athletes, friends, family members, staff, or other partners. These teams practice and compete together against other teams of the same composition, or can compete on city or intramural leagues. This is truly an opportunity for everyone to get involved.
The modified team events are designed to develop "lead up" sports skills required for effective team participation. The Special Olympics' individual skills contest is a program designed for lower-ability athletes or for those individuals with physical limitations. The purpose of each event is to develop and measure an athlete's skill in the particular task that is required to progress to the team sport.
Special Olympic Athlete Oath - "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt"
