  Sarsaparilla, Smilax Species

 Background Information
Sarsaparilla is an herb consisting of the roots of woody climbing plants native to Central and South America. Sarsaparilla comes from various species of Smilax belonging to the family Smilacaceae.

Sarsaparilla contains a mixture of saponins (steroids) derived from sarsapogenin and smilagenin. The saphrons have a strong diuretic and laxative effect.

 Effects on Health
Sarsaparilla has been used in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, inflammatory bowel conditions and skin inflammations. It is also recommended to treat syphilis. Today, it is widely promoted as a natural source of testosterone and a legal replacement for illegal androgenic steroids.

 Effects on Performance
There is no literature to support the use of sarsaparilla as a performance or endurance enhancer.
