Other substances often consumed as Supplements

Nutrient or Substance Comments
Amino Acids Conflicting reports have been published regarding the effects of amino acids on strength and performance. Long-term health effects of amino acid supplements are unknown.
L-Carnitine Use of carnitine by athletes carries potential risks. The only indication for carnitine use appears to be  in rare conditions of carnitine deficiency. In additions to L-Carnitine, athletes should not consume supplements with D- carnitine. D-carnitine may impair the synthesis of L-carnitine in the body leading to deficiency of L-carnitine and risk of myopathy and muscular weakness.
Melatonin  Use of melatonin should be used only for short- term adjustments to sleep patterns, with doses limited to 0.3 to 3 mg.
