Keller, Regis, Maisonneuve Join National Team as NIKE U.S. Cup '99 Approaches

The four-team Nike U.S. Cup '99, which includes the USA, Mexico, Guatemala and Bolivia, will be played as two doubleheaders on March 11 at the Los Angeles Coliseum and March 13 at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. Mexico are the two-time defending U.S. Cup champions after winning the event in both 1996 and '97. The United States won the inaugural Waterford Crystal U.S. Cup trophy in 1992 and repeated in 1995.
A total of five European-based players were called up for National Team duty, including Keller (Leicester City), Regis (FC Metz), midfielders Claudio Reyna (VfL Wolfsburg) and Tony Sanneh (Hertha Berlin), and forward Jovan Kirovski (Fortuna Cologne).
Arena's squad is also an assembly of 17 top MLS players, including four - Chris Armas (Chicago Fire), C.J. Brown (Chicago Fire), Eddie Lewis (San Jose Clash) and Brian McBride (Columbus Crew) - who have played in each of the four matches since Arena took over as head coach. McBride, in particular, has been the most consistent starter in a developing squad. Since starting and scoring a goal in the USA's World Cup loss to Iran, McBride has rattled off 540 consecutive minutes at forward for the USA.
Maisonneuve actually earned his first call-up under Arena prior to the USA-Australia match on Nov. 6, 1998, but left the camp after just two days of training with a recurring ankle injury. The 25- year-old midfielder, who started two and played in all three of the USA's matches at France '98, appears to be fully recovered from an ankle injury that has plagued him for more than a year.
The U.S. goalkeeping corps for the tournament includes Keller, who minded the U.S. nets at France '98, and Tony Meola, who was the USA's first-choice 'keeper during both the 1990 (Italy) and 1994 (USA) World Cups. With 89 and 34 appearances respectively, Meola and Keller are the two most experienced goalkeepers in U.S. Soccer history. Keller recently helped Leicester City earn a return trip to Wembley Stadium and the 1999 Worthington Cup Finals.
In a format change from the previous five U.S. Cup tournaments, each of the four teams will play two games as part of two doubleheaders, rather than playing three separate games, with the champion being decided first by total points (3 for a win, 1 for a draw), then head-to-head competition and then goal differential.
The U.S. National Team will open Nike U.S. Cup '99 against first-time participant Guatemala at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. (PT) in a match televised live on ESPN, with Bolivia facing off against Mexico in the second match at 8 p.m. (PT).
The U.S. squad will then face two-time defending U.S. Cup champion Mexico at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Calif., at 12:30 p.m. (PT) live on ABC. The second part of the doubleheader pits Bolivia against Guatemala at 3 p.m. (PT).

The National Team players and staff will gather in Los Angeles and begin training on Sunday (March 7) at the UCLA soccer fields.
