The stage is set for the bragging rights of the 'Windy City' when the defending PDL champion Chicago Sockers host the Chicago Fire, winners of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1998, at the "The Hive" in Arlington Heights, Ill. The Socker's defense has yet to concede a goal in both the first and second rounds of the 2000 Open Cup.
For another PDL team, the Mid Michigan Bucks, the Cinderella story has also begun. After defeating the New England Revolution, 1-0, in the second round, the Bucks will now try and stampede their way past the Miami Fusion when they host the MLS club on July 25 at White Pine Stadium in Saginaw, Mich.
Bound to be a soccer classic and rich in action, the defending Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champion Rochester Rhinos will travel to RFK Stadium on July 26 to take on the 1996 U.S. Open Cup winners, D.C. United. Both teams are looking for their second Open Cup title. D.C. United defeated the Rhinos in the 1996 Open Cup final, 3-0, to win their only Open Cup crown.
Dating back to 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in U.S. States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the U.S., the annual U.S. Open Cup is an 87-year-old-single-elimination tournament based on similar competitions played across the world concurrent with domestic league action.
In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the long- time soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, the owner of the Kansas City Wizards and Columbus Crew of MLS and the owner of the Dallas Tornados of the old NASL, was one of the sports first major ownership figures and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
