Fusion Tops Mid Michigan in PKs in U.S. Open Cup
SAGINAW, Mich. (Tuesday, July 25, 2000) - The Miami Fusion advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2000 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a hard-fought win in penalty kicks over the Mid Michigan Bucks in a game that ended 3-3 after two 15-minute overtime periods. Defender Pablo Mastroeni provided the wi

"We practiced [penalty kicks] for the first time in three years yesterday and we did well on those," said Mastroeni. "[Head coach] Ray [Hudson] did well to prepare us for the PKs."
The game was staged in front of a standing room only crowd of more than 4,000 at White Pine Stadium in Saginaw, Michigan -- home of the fourth division (Premier Development League) Bucks.
"It wasn't fun from the first moment the whistle blew," said Hudson. "This was the game that would not end against a team that would not die... We are delighted to get out of here with this result."
The Fusion got second half goals from Guatemalan Martin Machon, Colombian Diego Serna and Jamaican Andy Williams. Henry Gutierrez provided two assists. Player-coach Joe Malachino, forward Sam Piraine and Boniventure Maruti tallied for the Bucks. The Bucks played a man down for most of the game after midfielder Ousmane Coulibaly was ejected for a hard tackle on defender Brian Kamler in extra time of the first half.
The Fusion had a chance to win it in the final seconds when a penalty kick was awarded after rookie Kyle Beckerman was taken down in the box. But Pogue saved Machon's attempt to send the game into overtime. Beckerman was ejected shortly after when he received his second yellow card for dissent.
Maruti appeared to give the Bucks the victory with a header in the closing moments of the first overtime period, but the officials called off the goal due to a hand ball.
The Fusion will take on the winner of Wednesday night's "sweet sixteen" game between D.C. United and the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The quarterfinals are slated for August 9.
