With a win in Barbados, the United States will guarantee its advancement to the next round of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan. The Barbados match on November 15 will mark the final match for the United States in semifinal Group "E" qualifying for the 2002 World Cup. After two road games in Guatemala and Costa Rica, a 1-1 draw in Mazatenango and a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in San Jose, the United States posted two consecutive wins on home soil, a 7-0 home victory over Barbados in Foxboro and a 1-0 triumph over Guatemala at RFK Stadium before playing Costa Rica to a 0-0 draw in Columbus, Ohio, on October 11. The U.S. can also advance if Guatemala does not defeat Costa Rica at home on the same date.
The USA stands second in the four-team group with one game to play - two points behind Costa Rica and ahead of Guatemala by a single point. The top two teams from each of the three semifinal qualifying groups will advance to the next round, where CONCACAF's three representatives for the 2002 World Cup will be determined.
The match against Barbados will mark the sixth consecutive World Cup qualifying match to be shown live by the ABC/ESPN networks. This year, for the first time in U.S. Soccer history, the networks have broadcast road World Cup qualifiers live to soccer fans throughout the United States.
