Heinrichs Adds Two Players for Last Match of 2000 vs. Japan; U.S. Captain Carla Overbeck Will Play Her Final Game
CHICAGO (Tuesday, December 12, 2000) - U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs has added two players to the roster for the USA's match vs. Japan next Sunday at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix, Ariz., calling in defenders Keri Raygor and Mary-Frances Monroe.
Dec. 12, 2000
Raygor, 28, was a member of the national team pool from 1991-'94 as Keri Sanchez, earning eight caps including one start and one appearance as a substitute in Haiti at the 1991 CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament for the 1991 Women's World Cup. Her most recent appearance for the USA was March 18, 1994, against Sweden at the Algarve Cup in Portugal. If she plays against Japan, it would make six years, 274 days between appearances for the national team. Raygor, who was taken by the Boston Breakers in the 2nd Round of the Inaugural WUSA Player Draft, impressed the national team coaches at the WUSA Player Combine to earn the call-up. Raygor is currently the assistant women's soccer coach at the University of Oregon.
U.S. legend Carla Overbeck, who captained the U.S. National Team in four world championships during the last decade -- including an Olympic Gold Medal in 1996 and a Women's World Cup title in 1999 -- will play the final international game of her career at Bank One Ballpark, before bowing out from the national team.
The match against Japan, which concludes the three-game "Glory Tour" celebrating the success of the U.S. women in 2000, will be the 41st and final game of the busiest year in Women's National Team history. The USA shattered the record for most matches in a year, which was set in 1999 at 29 games, and with the onset of the Women's United Soccer Association, will likely never play that many games in a year again. Borgman, 19-year-old goalkeeper Hope Solo and 20-year-old Mary-Frances Monroe were all members of the 2000 U.S. Under-21 Nordic Cup championship team that defeated Germany, 1-0, last summer.
