Landon Donovan continued his slow return from a rib injury he picked up while playing in the CONCACAF Under-20 qualifying tournament, coming on in the 73rd minute of the Earthquakes 1-0 loss to the Dallas Burn.
Seth Trembly, also a member of the U.S. Under-20 team that recently qualified for Argentina 2001, came on in the 82nd minute of the Rapids 1-1 draw with the Metrostars.
On Wednesday, D.C. United and the Columbus Crew were in action in the return leg of the CONCACAF Giants Cup quarterfinals. U.S. Under-20 striker Edson Buddle played 90 minutes in the Crew's 1-1 draw with CD Saprissa in the return leg at Columbus Crew Stadium. Saprissa advanced with a 3-1 aggregate win.
Under-17 standout Santino Quaranta got his first professional start in the return leg of the quarterfinals on Wednesday, playing all 90 minutes and helping D.C. United advance to the semifinals with a 2-1 win. With D.C. United down 1-0 in the 30th minute, Quaranta was taken down in the penalty box and Carey Talley converted the ensuing penalty to even the match at 1-1. In the 86th minute, Quaranta received a ball on the right wing from Bryan Namoff and sent in a curling cross that Mark Lisi headed home for the United win.
