MLS Cup 2001 Ticket Plans Announced

"Major League Soccer is excited to bring our season's premier event to Columbus Crew Stadium," said MLS Commissioner Don Garber. "The city of Columbus has played host to some of the most exciting soccer matches in the United States and we are honored that MLS Cup 2001 will become a part of their soccer history."
In order to assure equitable distribution of tickets for MLS Cup 2001, a random computerized drawing will take place on August 6. The drawing enables fans to request up to four tickets by submitting an application by August 4. Fans may request an application for the random computer drawing by submitting their name, address, city, state, zip and daytime phone number via fax to (614) 447-4114 or via mail to: MLS Cup 2001, P.O. Box 82325, Columbus, OH 43202-2325. Applications are also available online at www.TheCrew.com and www.MLSnet.com.
"We are extremely proud that MLS Cup 2001 will be played in Columbus Crew Stadium," said Lamar Hunt, chairman of Hunt Sports and investor-operator of the Crew. "In revisiting the previous five MLS championship games we note they have attracted an average attendance of 45,499, so it was obvious that an equitable system needed to be developed to assure a broad geographical basis of the general public the opportunity to attend the 2001 event."
Any tickets remaining after the August 6 selection will go on sale to the general public one-week after the drawing is held. Individual ticket prices for the championship game are:
- Club: $52
- Midfield: $38
- Sideline/Corner: $29
- Endline: $23
A special offer is also being made to Columbus Crew ticket holders and members of the Ohio youth soccer associations who are eligible to receive discounts on MLS Cup 2001 tickets purchased prior to the August 6 drawing. Both groups will receive their priority offer via direct mail in the upcoming weeks.
"We are very excited to host one of MLS' signature games for the second year in a row," said Crew General Manager Jim Smith. "After the success of the 2000 MLS All-Star Game, we anticipate that orders will come from a broad geographical area. Due to the intimate and exciting setting Crew Stadium provides, we expect MLS Cup tickets to be in high demand."
The primary logo for the event, which has been designed with the Columbus Crew's "Hardest Working Team" motif in mind, prominently features the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy coming out of a riveted steel shield draped with an "MLS CUP" script banner. The logo's script is translated into "Copa MLS" to create a Spanish version for the Hispanic audience and uses Columbus Crew colors yellow, silver and black accented by the MLS logo. Firefly Design created the MLS Cup 2001 logo in collaboration with MLS Creative Services, and will be used on all marketing, promotional and merchandising campaigns associated with the event.
MLS Cup 2001 will feature two MLS teams vying for the league's championship and possession of the Alan I. Rothenberg Trophy. Each of the three MLS Division Champions will advance to the MLS Cup Playoffs and will be seeded #1, #2 or #3 by virtue of greater regular season point total. In order to complete the eight-team playoff bracket, the remaining five "wild card" teams will be determined by the total number of regular season points, regardless of division.
Currently in the midst of its sixth season, Major League Soccer features many top stars from the United States and around the world, and is America's only Division I men's outdoor professional soccer league. The 12 teams that comprise MLS are: the Chicago Fire, Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, D.C. United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, MetroStars, Miami Fusion, New England Revolution, San Jose Earthquakes and the Tampa Bay Mutiny.
