The "Round of 16" will feature a 2000 MLS Cup rematch as the champion Kansas City Wizards host the defending U.S. Open Cup title holders Chicago Fire, at the Blue Valley Sports Complex in Overland Park, Kansas, at 7:30 p.m. CT. The Wizards topped the 1-0 Fire to capture the MLS Cup last October in Washington, D.C., but the squads have never faced each other in Open Cup tournament play.
After hosting a doubleheader in the second round, the Milwaukee Rampage (A-League) will continue their home-stand as the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) visit the Milwaukee County Sports Complex at 5:30 p.m. CT.
Three intra-league match-ups will also take place on July 11 as the A-League's Pittsburgh Riverhounds travels to face the El Paso Patriots at Socorro Student Activities Complex in El Paso, Texas, at 7:35 p.m. MT., while the Richmond Kickers of the A-League host the Connecticut Wolves at the University of Richmond City Stadium at 7:00 p.m. ET. The third intra-league game will feature the Columbus Crew hosting the U.S. Open Cup runner-up Miami Fusion at Crew Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The New England Revolution (MLS) will host the Charleston Battery (A-League) at 7:30 p.m. ET, while U.S. Soccer will announce details of the eighth game, once the second round concludes on Monday (July 2) as the winner of the Second Round showdown between the A-League's Rochester Raging Rhinos and the Hershey Wildcats at Frontier Field in Rochester, N.Y. at 7:35 p.m. ET., will advance to face D.C. United (MLS) in third round competition.
Dating back to 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer cup competition in the United States and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the U.S., the annual Open Cup is an 88-year-old single-elimination tournament based on similar competitions played across the world concurrent with domestic league action.
In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the long-time soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, the owner of the Columbus Crew and Kansas City Wizards of MLS and the owner of the Dallas Tornados of the old NASL, was one of the sports first major ownership figures and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
