After 120 scoreless minutes, Korea topped Spain 5-3 on penalties to advance to the quarterfinals where they will face Germany on Tuesday in Seoul. Korea becomes the first Asian team to advance to the World Cup semi-finals.
Korea goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae saved Joaquin's weak penalty attempt, allowing Korean captain Hong Myung-bo to seal the game with a goal from the spot.
Spain had two goals disallowed, including a Fernando Morientes goal in extratime that would have been a golden goal winner.
