CHICAGO (March 19, 2012) – The U.S. Beach Soccer Team competed in the Beach Soccer Worldwide Copa America and emerged winless from each of its three games, losing against Brazil, Mexico and Argentina.
The U.S. lost to Brazil 12-4 in the opening game of the tournament, being held in Rio Quente, Brazil, from March 16-18. After initially taking the lead with a Benny Astorga free kick in the sixth minute, the USA then conceded from a Brazil free kick just before the end of the first period. Oscar Reyes, Jason Leopoldo and Oscar Gil each added a tally but it was not enough to secure the win.
In the second match of the competition, the U.S. and Mexico ended regulation time tied at 3-3 with both teams seeing plenty of action on the ball. Nixson Rodriguez got on the scoresheet first for the U.S. and Tino Nuñez added the remaining two goals. Mexico won on penalty kicks after Astorga’s shot was saved.
The U.S. closed out the Copa America with a disappointing loss against Argentina in the third-place match. The teams tied 5-5 after the U.S. had built a 5-1 lead by the end of the second period with goals from Rodriguez, Michael Lawler, Gil and Leopoldo. Argentina capitalized on the USA’s weakness and scored four unanswered goals in the third period, then scored its first penalty while Reyes missed his.
Brazil won the Copa America title while Mexico finished in second place.
