Development Academy Weekend Wrap-Up
With the conclusion of the fall Development Academy season, four Southern California-based clubs were in action in San Diego over the holiday weekend.

CHICAGO (Nov. 27, 2007) – With the conclusion of the fall Development Academy season, four Southern California-based clubs were in action in San Diego over the holiday weekend.
In the Under-17/18 Irvine Strikers Development Academy debut, they traveled to take on So Cal Conference rival San Diego Surf. The Strikers got on the board first when Oscar Reyes-Zarate scored in the 21st minute. The Surf answered back in the second half, when John Fitzpatrick evened the score in the 54th minute, and Mike Denny gave the Surf the lead just two minutes later. With six seconds remaining in the game, Peter Fischen pulled Irvine even, giving them a 2-2 draw in their opening game.
Three second-half goals lifted Real So Cal to victory in its first-ever Academy game after falling behind early. Jonas Reiter scored an 11th minute goal to put Pateadores on top. The La Canada, Calif. club held onto its advantage until the 65th minute when Christian Vasquez pulled Real So Cal even. Russell Jackson and Evan Raynr each scored in the final 10 minutes to secure the win for Real So Cal.
On Saturday, the San Diego Surf drew with Real So Cal , 2-2, in San Diego. John Fitzpatrick scored in the 18th minute to put the home team on top, and the score remained 1-0 through halftime. Just ten minutes into the second half, Raynr scored his second goal of the weekend, and in the 71st minute teammate Juan Valladolid gave Real So Cal the advantage. Just three minutes before the final whistle, Mike Denny scored the game-tying goal for San Diego, for the final score of 2-2.
Two second-half goals from Jesse Pacheco helped the San Diego Surf earn a 2-2 draw with the Irvine Strikers in Friday’s SoCal Conference action, as Irvine made its Academy debut. Cory Wolfrom gave Irvine an early lead in the 16th minute, and Alec Sundly doubled the Strikers lead six minutes before halftime. Their lead would prove to be temporary, as Pacheco’s first goal came in the 62nd minute and his second goal evened the score in the 71st.
Another SoCal Conference debutant, Pateadores, kicked off their Academy campaign with a win over Real So Cal on Friday in San Diego. It took just two minutes for Dersu Abolfathi to get on the board for Pateadores and give his team an early lead. Just seconds before halftime, Jose Monterozza leveled the score. With a tie game looming, Evan Walker scored for Pateadores less than a minute after entering the game in the 76th minute, helping his side get off to a 1-0 start.
On Saturday, Real So Cal got an early goal from Raymond Osuna and a late goal from Cesar Rodriguez to earn a 2-1 victory against the San Diego Surf. After taking the lead in the third minute, Real So Cal conceded a goal to Zack Wolfenzon in the 26th minute before Rodriguez’s goal in the 78th minute lifted Real So Cal to victory.
Two goals scored just three minutes apart in the second half gave the Irvine Strikers a 2-0 win over Pateadores on Saturday. After a scoreless first half, Ernesto Mora put one away in the 47th minute to give Irvine the lead. Just three minutes later, Wolfrom’s second goal of the weekend gave Irvine some breathing room, and they would hold on for the win.
