CARSON, Calif. (July 12, 2009) – Continuing their run at a U-17/18’s D.A. national championship, Carmel United SC defeated the Dallas Texans 1-0 off a goal from Nikita Kotlov in the 13th minute. The win makes Carmel the only undefeated team in group 1, while Dallas falls to 0-1-1.
Both teams came out aggressively trying to pass the ball around, but both defenses were also up to the challenge and the early minutes saw many attacks get snuffed out inside the goal box. A couple of long range efforts were taken in an attempt to test the goalkeepers, but neither found the frame.
Utilizing one of their unique weapons, Carmel United got on the board first with a headed finish by Nikita Kotlov in the 13th minute. From a long throw in from the right sideline, forward Matthew Sanner got up to the ball first and flicked a header across the box. On the receiving end was Kotlov, nodding home the ball into the right side netting.
Despite the momentum, Carmel seemed to stop pressing the attack, and Dallas took advantage. In the 20th minute, a turnover at midfield gave the Texans a 5v4 counter attack. Surging forward, Ray Deleon chose to have a go from 28 yards dead center, but his shot went wide to the left.
In the 63rd, Kotlov was instrumental in almost doubling their lead, by taking the ball down the right sideline and turning the corner on the Texans’ Lenox Evans. His cross was sent out, but the clearance fell to the feet of Jeremy Vollmer. Attempting the volley, Vollmer’s shot went high and wide.
With the clock dwindling down and Dallas pressing for the equalizer, Carmel took to playing keep away, passing the ball around the midfield and defense trying to kill the clock. Largely succeeding, Dallas only got one more chance on a long ball into the box with very few seconds left that Carmel goalkeeper Jon Dawson did well to come out and catch, ensuring the shutout for his team.
