CARSON, Calif. (July 10, 2009) - With a goal in the opening minute of Finals Week, D.C. United strolled to a 3-1 victory over North Carolina’s CASL Chelsea FC Academy. D.C. United forward Andy Najar scored a hat trick, netting all three goals in the first 30 minutes of the match. CASL pulled one back in the 83rd minute, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Starting the game off with some simple possession, intense pressure from D.C. United forced an error only 46 seconds in when a back pass to the goalkeeper was given too little pace. Sprinting onto the ball, forward Andy Najar touched it around the sprawling Joseph Goodwin at the top of the box and calmly slotted the ball into the right side netting. Shocked and stunned, CASL tried to regroup, but just three minutes later, a turnover deep in their end resulted in another great chance for D.C. Stripping the defender on the left side, Christopher Hegngi sent a cross through the box that Michael Funes volleyed over the bar.
In the 7th minute, D.C. again capitalized on yet another defensive miscue, with another back pass intercepted and coolly finished by Najar for his second on the day.
United kept up the pressure, and in the 28th minute earned a free kick 35 yards out on the right side. Taken by Funes, the inswinger found Hegngi running towards the near post, but he couldn’t get power behind the shot and it was easily smothered by Goodwin. One minute later, however, Najar would get his third. A long ball played from the back found the head of Hegngi while Najar sprinted right by him. Deftly flicking it on with his head, Hegngi sprung his teammate for a 1v1 with the goalkeeper where he once again took it to the side of the keeper and rolled it in.
The second half saw a turn in fortunes at times, as CASL had the majority of the chances, but almost all were left begging. In the 83rd minute, however, high pressure by CASL’s forwards produced a turnover deep in the box. Sending it across the goal, second half substitute Joseph Babington managed to pounce on the loose ball and force it home to prevent the shutout.
The win puts D.C. United atop their group after day 1, as PDA and Real Colorado drew 2-2 in the day’s earlier game. Next up for the Washington, D.C. club is Real Colorado on Sunday, July 12 at 6 pm, while CASL Chelsea FC Academy will kick off one hour later against PDA.
