CARSON, Calif. (July 10, 2010) – Cal Odyssey U-15/16 defeated CASL Chelsea FC Academy U-15/16 in the opening match of the 2010 Development Academy Finals Week by a 4-2 score. Both Villyan Bijev of Cal Odyssey and Monbo Bakar of CASL scored two goals in the match that opened up in the second half.
Vicente Rodarte and Daniel Flores added to Biyev’s opener to give Cal Odyssey a 3-0 lead in the 52nd minute but CASL fought back through Bakar’s goals to make the game 3-2 with 18 minutes left to find the equalizer. However, Biyev struck again four minutes from time to seal the win for Cal Odyssey and send them top of Group 2 in the U-15/16 age division.
The first chances of the match came from a long throw on the left side that Cal Odyssey used to generate two shots in the 7th minute. The shots proved to be ominous as the side from Northern California scored on the 8th minute on their next throw in the attacking third – this time from the right. After the initial challenge for the ball at the penalty spot, the chance fell to Biyev who made no mistake from 10 ten yards and tucked home his shot in the left side of the goal.
CASL sought an answer in the 10th minute through Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler who rolled a shot wide after powering through his defender. As the half moved on, the Carolina side pressed in search of the equalizer but again fell victim to a set piece in the 24th minute. A Cal Odyssey corner from the left was bravely punched out by CASL ‘keeper Spencer LaCivita but not far enough to clear the head of the waiting Rodarte, whose audacious one-time volley from 23 yards emphatically doubled Cal Odyssey’s lead.
CASL was in need of a goal before halftime and were almost caught on the break by the speedy Cal Odyssey attack as they pushed for a goal in the waning moments of the first period, but the score would remain 2-0 as both teams regrouped for the break.
The second half started much in the same fashion as the first ended with CASL starting brightly and Cal Odyssey waiting to take advantage on the counter. Greg Antognolli II almost provided such a chance for Cal Odyssey in the 46th minute as he arrived before LaCivita to a searching ball from midfield only to see his rolling effort cleared off the line by a sliding CASL defender.
The match seemed to be hitting a lull as just over 10 minutes had passed in the second half until an innocuous ball out of the back by Cal Odyssey was collected by the CASL defense in the 52nd minute. An industrious Flores closed on the defenders and dispossessed his man approximately 30 yards from goal. In on goal, he took his chance well and struck a firm shot that LaCivita could only get a hand on before hitting the back of the net.
The three goal advantage would not last long, however, as CASL’s next possession produced their first goal. Perhaps caught flat-footed, the Cal Odyssey defense was carved open down the left and Bakary finished a rebound from 8 yards after the initial chance hit the left post.
Bakary doubled his tally just eight minutes later in the 62nd when he converted a penalty to goalkeeper Matt Dishno’s right after a handball in the box.
With CASL making a comeback after finding themselves down three goals, the game opened up for both teams and a goal seemed certain to come as both teams were open to the counter. In the end, it was Biyev who provided in the 76th. Jon-Paul Medina won the ball in midfield for Cal Odyssey who found Antognolli II at the top of the box after making a surging run. Antognolli II one timed has pass to the oncoming Biyev who drove his shot low and hard to the near post to complete his double and seal the victory for Cal Odyssey.
Cal Odyssey now finds themselves atop Group 2 – the lone team with 3 points. They next play the Internationals at 4 p.m. PT on July 12 on Field 2 at the The Home Depot Center. CASL will look to bounce back against Baltimore Bays Chelsea on July 12 on Field 3 at 3 p.m. PT.
