Development Academy Finals Week Day 3 Notes

Find out what's in store as we head into the second day of U-15/16 matches.

ALL SET AFTER ONE: All 16 teams at Development Academy Finals Week now have a game under their belts as the U-17/18 groups got underway last night. Four matches at The Home Depot Center saw FC Dallas and CASL Chelsea FC Academy earn wins in Group 1 and Baltimore Bays Chelsea pick up the lone win in Group 2, a 4-1 win against Concorde Fire. The other Group 2 match on the day saw Real So Cal earn a late draw in front of family and friends as the lone local team at The Home Depot Center.

ON TO MONDAY: There are two U-15/16 teams who have a chance to clinch a berth in the national championship game on only the second day of games. On Sunday, the younger groups took the day to recover from the hotly contested first games through training and regeneration. The Chicago Fire took early control of Group 1 with a win against local rival Sockers FC, while Cal Odyssey was the lone victor in Group 2. With another win on Monday and a draw in the other game, both teams have a chance to clinch a berth in the championship match with a game to spare.

U-15/16 Quick Hits 

• Cal Odyssey striker Villyan Bijev netted two goals against CASL on Saturday afternoon, bringing his season total to 20. 
• CASL’s Monbo Bakar also scored a brace in that match, albeit in a losing effort. 
• Internationals goalkeeper made the only save of a penalty kick so far on the week when he dove to his right to deny Michael Gamble and preserve the scoreless draw against Baltimore Bays Chelsea. 
• In an eventful match that closed out the day on Saturday, D.C. United held on to a scoreless draw against DeAnza Force despite being down a player for 70 minutes. 
• Sockers FC and Chicago Fire traveled more than 2,000 miles to meet at The Home Depot Center, with the Fire taking a 2-1 win in the intra-divisional match.

NEXT IN GROUP 1: Chicago Fire took control of Group 1 with a victory against local rival Sockers FC and will be looking to keep a firm grip on the group with a win against D.C. United in a battle of MLS academies. Meanwhile, Sockers FC is hoping to keep its Finals Week dream alive, looking for the full three points against DeAnza.

GROUP 2 CONTINUES: Two Chelsea academies will do battle on Monday in Group 2 as Baltimore Bays Chelsea and CASL Chelsea FC Academy square off. Internationals continue their first-ever trip to Finals Week with a key game against Cal Odyssey, from which they’ll need to take points.

THE MOST COMPETITIVE MATCHES: The Development Academy playoff system was created to add to the number of meaningful games for Academy athletes, further enhancing the player development process. Since its launch in the fall of 2007, the Academy has improved the training environment, provided relevant, high-level matches on a consistent basis, increased the level and efficiency of scouting for the national teams and provided players, coaches and referees with structured programming.
