Adrian Gonzalez has been selected as the Development Academy Referee of the Week for an outstanding performance on Saturday, Oct. 23, in a West Conference matchup between the L.A. Galaxy and Seattle Sounders FC.
Although Gonzalez has only been officiating since 2005, he has quickly advanced to a top level state referee. He is a veteran in the California South Development Academy region and has participated in all three of the past Academy Finals Weeks. He has also officiated more than two dozen Youth National Team games and MLS practice and exhibition matches. In addition to his work in the Development Academy, Gonzalez has experience in the PDL and W-Leagues.
Gonzalez has worked in soccer in various capacities—as a player in his youth and now as a state level referee and coach of a local youth team. He became involved in officiating at the age of 17 with the encouragement of his older brothers. On refereeing in the Development Academy, Gonzalez writes “I thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere and the challenges that come with officiating high level soccer, as well as the opportunity to meet so many great individuals in the referee community.” He is quick to thank his state association for the resources and opportunities as well as his local colleagues who, he mentions, “are always willing to provide feedback and advice to young referees.”
