PHOENIX (Dec. 4, 2010) – As the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team and Nike International Friendlies took a break on Saturday, aspiring national team players born in 1992 and 1993 took to the showcase field at the 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase with Vilyan Bijev scoring the games three goals in a 3-0 victory for Red against Blue.
All of the players in the match are eligible for the 2011 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and many have been a part of youth national team player pools in the past. U.S. Under-20 head coach Thomas Rongen, Under-18 head coach Mike Matkovich, U.S. Soccer Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna and numerous other U.S. Soccer Technical Advisers and scouts were on hand evaluating the match.
The Red squad opened the scoring in the sixth minute and continued to control the match throughout the first half. Bijev, who plays with Cal Odyssey, was played into the right side of the penalty area by a diagonal pass from Concorde Fire’s Robert Botchway where he calmly finished to his left inside the far post.
The second goal featured much of the same, with U.S. U-17 MNT alumnus Nick Palodichuk playing a driven pass forward to the feet of Botchway about 30 yards from goal. Botchway, who has committed to play at Penn, again played Bijev into the area. This time the finish was from the left side of the area inside the right post.
Bijev earned the natural hat trick in the 32nd minute with Jamael Cox playing the role of provider with a longer pass into the area to Bijev’s feet. A low near-post finish gave the match its final goal.
Each head coach made mass changes at halftime to give the scouts a look at a variety of players. The teams played even for 45 minutes, although the Blue team created its best chance in the 75th minute. CASL Chelsea’s Monbo Bokar, who twice called Red goalkeeper Matthew Pacifici (North Meck SC) into action to make saves, hit a shot off the far post. Ricardo Velasco (Real Salt Lake AZ) had a chance to put the rebound into an empty net from a tight angle but only found side netting.
