CASL Chelsea FC Academy and Baltimore Bays Close Group 2 with a 1-1 Draw

MILWAUKEE (July 13, 2011) – CASL Chelsea FC Academy and Baltimore Bays Chelsea played to a thrilling 1-1 draw in the final group game at Development Academy Finals Week. An early Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler goal put CASL up 1-0, but the Bays answered in the 29th minute through Michael Gamble.

With the draw, CASL Chelsea FC will play July 16 in the third-place match against the Dallas Texans , while Baltimore Bays Chelsea will match up against New York Red Bulls for fifth place.

With both teams having an opportunity to win Group 2 and play in the championship game, they brought spirit and intent from the opening whistle.

Vandermass-Peeler converted on the game’s first dangerous opportunity in the 12 minute. He received the ball at the top of the box on the right side and cut back hard onto his left foot to shake off his defender, then fired a zinger toward the near post that beat Bays goalkeeper Andrew Harris to give CASL a 1-0 lead.

Bays found the equalizer in the 29th minute through Gamble’s second goal of Finals Week. A free kick opportunity was delivered low into the box and blocked by CASL’s defense. The rebound popped over to Gamble on the right edge of the penalty area, where he took an impressive touch toward goal and hit an enterprising shot that beat goalkeeper Paul West to the far post.

With both squads playing for the win, each began to take risks in the attack. The risks nearly paid off for CASL in the 82nd minute when left back Logan Paussa bombed forward and brought the ball into the corner, where he lost his marker. Paussa slotted the ball across the goal, where Monbo Bokar and Gabe Rivera were hovering but couldn’t find the finishing touch.

CASL went down to 10 men in the 82nd minute when Seth Moses picked up a second yellow card, then were reduced to nine when Tanner Vosvick was sent off in stoppage time.

With a two-man advantage, CASL was able to press even harder for the game-winner. With a great individual effort, Mike Paye drove down the left wing and played a cross into the path of a crashing Bokar, whose header from close range flew high over the goal.

That would prove to be the final chance of the game, giving CASL Chelsea FC Academy five points from their three group games and Baltimore Bays Chelsea finishing with four.
