MILWAUKEE, Wis. (July 9, 2011) – The Under-17/18 Dallas Texans posted a 2-1 victory against Players Development Academy at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, Wis., in their first group match at 2011 Development Academy Finals Week. In a match that saw all three goals recorded in the first half, the Texans were led by goals from ussoccer.com Man of the Match Caleb Richardson and captain Aaron Simmons. Christiano Francois pulled one back for Players Development Academy, but despite a 12-4 edge in shots they were unable to reverse the final score.
Dallas Texans will next face Pateadores under the stadium lights at 8 p.m. CT on Monday, July 11, at Valley Fields at Marquette University. Players Development Academy will face off against New York Red Bulls at 5:30 p.m. CT at Marquette University High School.
"It's great to get the three points in the first game," said Dallas Texans head coach David Hudgell. "We started off playing very well in the first 25 minutes and got up two-nil. We allowed the other team to get back into it, and from that point in time it was very difficult. They had a lot of pressure and a lot of chances to tie the game up, but we held on and worked very hard to get the three points. "
Richardson smacked home the first goal in the 12th minute after a Texans' corner kick was cleared out by the Players Development Academy defense just past the top of the area. Joseph Haines swung the ball back out wide, and the second cross forced goalkeeper David Giddings off his line. Challenged by Eduardo Aranda, the 'keeper parried the ball in front of the goal where Richardson pushed home the rebound.
Texans captain Aaron Simmons made it 2-0 just 15 minutes later. Jake Douglas took a long throw in on the left side that went into the 18-yard-box, where Simmons managed a skillful flick-on header that looped just inside the far post.
Francois cut the lead in half just before the interval as PDA began to control the possession with passes on the ground that slowly broke down the Dallas Texans defense. PDA forward Noah Sadaoui gained control on the left flank and streaked forward, crossing in a ball that Francois got a head on that floated just past the outstretched fingertips of Texans goalkeeper Nicholas Petolick.
The second half began with Dallas pushing forward and creating danger in the 48th minute when Brandon Perez slipped a pass up to Richardson deep in the PDA end, but three defenders closed in before he could get a shot off.
Dallas kept pressuring, and in the 86th minute second-half sub Grant Morrison broke through, leaving the PDA defense behind as he raced for a loose ball that was played behind the backline. But Giddings was ready, coming off his line quickly and snuffing out the opportunity at the top of the box before Morrison could get a touch on it.
Two minutes later, it was PDA that came knocking as Francois held the ball in the middle of the field and chipped a pass over the multitude of defenders in front of him. Matthew Jeffrey tried his luck on a volley, but sent his shot well over the goal.
The end of the game was full of excitement and end-to-end action. The play developed when PDA delivered a long throw that skimmed several heads in front of the goalmouth before Petolick snagged the ball in the air and came running out of the cluster of players to launch a counter by finding Morrison with some time and space. Spotting Giddings off his line, he blasted a powerful shot from distance, but the PDA ‘keeper managed to get back far enough to parry it over the goal for a corner.
The referee signaled five minutes of stoppage time and PDA tried to find the elusive equalizer. In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Francois dropped another ball over the defense, but his teammate making the run just missed the header at the near post.
