De Anza Force Alum Christian Dean Selected No. 3 Overall in 2014 MLS SuperDraft

Eighteen Development Academy Alumni Picked in Opening Day of Draft

Former De Anza Force Academy player Christian Dean was selected as the No. 3 overall pick by the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Eighteen of the 38 players selected have ties to the Development Academy: seven first-round picks and 11 second-round selections.

Among some of the other early selections, former Minnesota Thunder defender Eric Miller was fifth overall by the Montreal Impact. Miller was a member of the U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team that competed at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

The Colorado Rapids picked two former Development Academy players with their two first-round picks: IMG Academy’s Marlon Hairston at No. 12 (who also played for the U-20 MNT in 2013) and Andromeda FC alum Grant Van De Casteele at No. 19 overall to cap off the first round.

Three different clubs had two former players selected in the opening rounds: Real Colorado (Kyle Venter and Robbie Derschang, both to the Philadelphia Union), Strikers FC (Joe Sofia to the San Jose Earthquakes and Alec Sundly to the New England Revolution) and St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri (AJ Cochran to the Houston Dynamo and Adnan Gabeljic to Sporting Kansas City).
