Semifinal Draw for 2013 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Announced

CHICAGO (June 20, 2013) – As the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup enters the final stages, the official pairings and potential hosts for the semifinal round of the tournament have been announced. Both games will be played on Aug. 7, with the exact matchups and locations to be determined following the quarterfinal round, scheduled for June 26.

Orlando City SC (Division III, USL PRO) and the Carolina RailHawks (Division II, North American Soccer League) will be looking to join the shortlist of non-Division I Major League Soccer teams to advance to the semifinals of the Open Cup since 1996. Only 12 non-MLS teams have reached the final four.

In the fourth round, Orlando City SC upset MLS affiliate and defending Open Cup champion Sporting Kansas City 1-0 on a goal less than two minutes into the game, while it took overtime for the NASL’s Carolina RailHawks to get the win against Chivas USA.

The Chicago Fire and D.C. United are tied for the most semifinal appearances in modern-era Open Cup history (1995 to present) with eight a piece, while FC Dallas has seven.
