Team Breakdown

Chicago Fire
Chicago reached the quarterfinals for the ninth time, tied for the Open Cup record. After beating the Charlotte Eagles in Round 3, the Fire got past MLS rival Columbus Crew in a weather-delayed Round 4. Chicago then beat USL PRO side Orlando City SC, which had just defeated the defending Open Cup Champion Sporting Kansas City, to make it to the semifinals.

  • This is Chicago’s eighth semifinal appearance, tied for most in Open Cup history with D.C. United
  • The Fire has a 6-2 record in the semifinals

D.C. United
Despite having the worst record in MLS, D.C. United is making an unprecedented run in the U.S. Open Cup. After having two players sent off in extra time of its fourth-round game against the Richmond Kickers, D.C. still held on to prevail in PKs. D.C. United got a pair of 3-1 wins against the Philadelphia Union in the fourth round and against a confident New England Revolution side on the quarterfinals. Dwayne De Rosario leads D.C. into the semifinals with four goals in the tournament, tied for second-most in this year’s tournament.

Real Salt Lake
This is the first time Real Salt Lake has made it to the semifinal round of the U.S. Open Cup. Real Salt Lake advanced out of the third and fourth rounds with a pair of victories in extra time against the NASL’s Atlanta Silverbacks and USL PRO side Charleston Battery, respectively. They then shut out the Carolina RailHawks 3-0 in the quarterfinals with goals from Tony Beltran, Chris Wingert and Alvaro Saborio.

The Portland Timbers hosted the Wilmington Hammerheads of USL PRO for a 5-1 victory in the third round. Wins against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the fourth round and FC Dallas in the quarterfinals sealed their trip to their first semifinals. Frederic Piquionne scored an Open Cup record four goals in the third-round game against Wilmington, and sits alone atop the Open Cup scoring leaders list with five goals.
