Arena Finalizes Roster as Rose Bowl Showdown with Iran Nears
CLAREMONT, Calif. (Wednesday, January 12, 2000) - U.S. National Team Head Coach Bruce Arena trimmed his roster to 26 players today as the team enters the final stages of preparation for the historic showdown with Iran at the Rose Bowl on Sunday. Arena sent four players home from camp, and reassigned two others to the U-23 team, currently training at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. Though released from duty for the Iran match, each of the players are expected to remain regulars with the National Team in 2000. Kevin Hartman, Steve Ralston, Henry Gutierrez, and Clint Mathis left Claremont on Wednesday, while Steve Cherundolo and John O'Brien will join Clive Charles' U-23 squad on Thursday.
SENIOR SQUAD BATTLES FEISTY U-23'S IN PAIR OF CLAREMONT SCRIMMAGES: The U.S. Men's National Team withstood its toughest test of training camp on Tuesday as the team hosted the Under-23 National Team for a pair of 80-minute scrimmages at Pomona-Pitzer College.
Marcelo Balboa led the senior squad to a 1-0 victory in the first game, heading home John Harkes' pin-point cross two minutes from the final whistle. Chris Brown (Kansas City Wizards) led the U-23's to victory in the second game, where he set up Brian West's first half strike and scored the game-winner in a 2-1 victory. Chad Deering scored the only goal for the senior team in the second game.

CHEVROLET ATHLETES OF THE YEAR PRESS CONFERENCE IN PASADENA SATURDAY: U.S. Soccer will hold an 11:30 a.m. press conference at the DoubleTree Hotel in Pasadena on Saturday to present the annual Chevrolet Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards. Presented annually to the players who excel both on and off the field, the awards were won by Cobi Jones and Mia Hamm in 1998.
