Post Game Quotes: U.S. MNT 2, Trinidad & Tobago 1
See what Coach Arena, Kasey Keller and Ed Johnson had to say about the U.S. MNT's first match of the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany.
Feb. 9, 2005
On the result:
"Obviously it is a great result for the U.S. team. I think the way our team pulled together over the last couple of weeks to be ready to play this game under difficult conditions was great. It turned out to be a fantastic result for us. Winning qualifying games on the road is a very difficult challenge, and to pull it off in the opening game with the issues we were dealing with is fantastic. I am very pleased."
On the victory:
"It's massive. Especially after all the drama that has gone on. The guys got together and got a great victory. And now we have to move forward. The goal for this group is to qualify for the World Cup and we have taken a big step in the first game."
On Trinidad's pressure at the end of the game:
"It was getting a little bit warm there at the end, and the guys kind of faded a bit and that's a shame because we really did control the tempo for the majority of the game. As they started throwing so many players forward at the end of the game, we really didn't cope with it as well as we'd like to, and that is something we need to work on in the future. Fantastic credit to everybody, though, we came together and got a vital three points in the first away game to open qualifying."
On his breakaway stop of Leslie Fitzpatrick just one minute before the USA's second goal:
"On the save, I was letting him get close enough so I could tackle him. I was a little bit afraid of coming to far out of the box, so what I wanted to do was just kind of suck him in and win the tackle."
On the Trinidad goal:
"(Angus Eve) broke around us on the line, and I'm pretty upset about it. I got a hand to it, but it was either too much or not enough, I don't know what the problem was."
On his goal, his sixth in four career caps:
"It was one of those situations where I put myself in a good spot, kind of like when I scored against Panama. Brian (McBride) made the far-post run, I made my run near-post, and it was a good ball from (Steve) Cherundolo, and I just got on the end of it. The weight was already on the ball and I just had to redirect it. I think I caught the 'keeper off guard a bit."
On earning his first start on the road in World Cup qualifying:
"Bruce told me that it is only going to get harder. He told me I'm not going to score every game. And (today) it was tougher. It is about taking advantage of the chances you get, because you don't get that many chances. I didn't get many chances tonight, but when I did I took it well."
On the 90-degree heat in Trinidad:
"The heat was a big factor. I haven't played in a game this hot in awhile. It is about being smart and pacing yourself in the beginning. We knew it was going to be tough. It is always hard playing on the road. We've got veteran guys like (Eddie) Pope, (Brian) McBride, (Eddie) Lewis, Landon (Donovan) and (DaMarcus) Beasley who know how to win games."
