Fresh off their World Cup qualifying win against Trinidad & Tobago, several members of the U.S. MNT carried that momentum back to their European club sides this weekend.
Podcast: European Update w/ Bobby Convey
Brian McBride, who collected the lone U.S. goal vs. Trinidad (watch), beat fellow American Brad Friedel for Fulham’s only goal in the 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Blackburn Rovers. Fulham was without the services of Carlos Bocanegra, who continues to fight back from injury. U.S. captain Claudio Reyna played all 90 minutes in Manchester City’s 2-1 win against Birmingham. Across town, Manchester United earned a 1-0 victory against Aston Villa as Tim Howard was ready in reserve. Bobby Convey continued his strong play, netting a pair of goals for Reading FC. After registering an assist and a handful of dangerous scoring opportunities in the USA’s 1-0 win vs. Trinidad, Convey found the net twice in the opening 25 minutes as his side cruised to a 5-0 win past Millwall. The result also marked the third consecutive clean sheet for Marcus Hahnemann, whose impressive start has led Reading to the top of the Championship table. Eddie Lewis also notched his first goal of the season for Leeds in their 2-0 win over Wolverhampton.
Kasey Keller, currently the top goalkeeper for Bruce Arena and team USA, turned in a solid outing for Borussia Moenchengladbach in the opening round of the German Cup, posting his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win against Kutzof. Gregg Berhalter, returning from the USA’s qualifier, did not suit up for Energie Cottbus, who won their German Cup match in penalty kicks against RW Essen. Steve Cherundolo, recovering from injury, was also unavailable for Hannover’s 2-0 victory against FC Koln II.
In Belgium, Oguchi Onyewu, another centerpiece of the U.S. defense, went the distance helping Standard de Liege to a 2-0 victory over St. Truiden. The shutout was the first of the young season for Standard, and keeps them undefeated at 3-0.
DaMarcus Beasley is still looking for his first appearance of the season with Dutch side PSV Heindhoven as he continues to rehab the hamstring injury that kept him out of the qualifier vs. Trinidad.
