In the 71st minute, Donovan cleverly spins past his defender and holds the ball on the left side before slipping a ball into the center for Altidore. The burly forward cuts past his defender and calmly curls a shot into the right side netting. In the 89th minute, Michael Bradley carries the ball into the area and unselfishly dishes to an unmarked Donovan on the left side of the six-yard box. Donovan, who could easily have taken a point-blank shot, instead taps it back out to the center of the area where Altidore hits a low bouncer that sneaks into the lower left corner.

Dempsey touches the ball back behind the midfield stripe to Michael Bradley, who takes a touch before playing the ball to Donovan. Donovan comes back to receive the ball at the front edge of the center circle, and quickly turns inside and dribbles forward. He looks up and finds Charlie Davies behind the left side of the Mexico defense. Davies speeds in on Guillermo Ochoa’s goal and coolly curves a right footed shot around the Mexico goalkeeper from 16 yards.
Sept. 5 – Hexagonal Match 7 vs. El Salvador (2-1 W) – 2 assists
The USA once again engineers a comeback as Donovan assists on both goals, coming in the 41st minute and in stoppage time of the first half. The first goal comes as Donovan whips a free kick into the penalty box where Dempsey beats El Salvador’s offside trap and is all alone in front of the goal to hit a diving header perfectly into the bottom left hand corner from just outside the six yard box. The winning goal comes after earning two corners that were cleared out by the Salvadoran defense. Donovan again sends in a cross from the left side and the deflection falls to Michael Bradley. The midfielder used his body to shield the ball as he dribbles up and down the left side of the goal box, looking for an option. He eventually pulls a second defender towards him, leaving Donovan wide open to receive his simple pass and send in yet another cross. This one is perfectly placed right on the penalty spot where Jozy Altidore jumps to power a header into the left side netting for a picture-perfect goal.
Sept. 9 – Hexagonal Match 8 at Trinidad & Tobago (1-0 W) – 1 assist
Donovan sets up Ricardo Clark for the winning goal and just the second ever international score for the defensive midfielder. Dempsey finds Donovan on the left just outside the 18-yard box and, as Dempsey and others run through, he finds Clark trailing the play and rolls a perfect square pass into his path. Clark blasts a 26-yard shot that tails away from the T & T ‘keeper and sticks in the right side of the net.
Oct. 10 – Hexagonal Match 9 at Honduras (3-2 W) - 1 goal, 1 assist
Donovan sets up Conor Casey for the USA’s second goal and then scores the third on a spectacular free kick, which turns out to be game winner. Davies takes the ball across midfield before playing it square to Donovan. Dribbling toward the middle, Donovan hreads a perfect ball through the defense for Casey, who gets behind the last defender in the area. Casey fakes a shot to get the Honduras ‘keeper to the ground and then calmly slots the ball inside the right post. Donovan’s goal came in the 71st minute after Casey had earned a dangerous free kick 22-yards from goal.
