U.S. Paralympic National Soccer Team Falls to England in Pair of Training Camp Friendlies
U.S. PNST Suffers Respective 2-1 and 3-2 Defeats during Second Camp of 2014
Feb. 9, 2014
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (Feb. 8, 2014) – The U.S. Paralympic National Soccer Team suffered a pair of one-goal defeats to England in two international friendlies during its second training camp of 2014.
After holding the team’s first training camp at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif., in January, new U.S. PNST head coach Stuart Sharp gathered the squad for a second week-long camp last week, this time at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. The USA played its first competitive matches under the guidance of Sharp during the most recent camp, falling 2-1 on Wednesday and 3-2 on Saturday.
In the first match, Rene Renteria, who was recently voted U.S. Soccer’s 2013 Disabled Athlete of the Year, scored the lone goal for the USA. Renteria featured again in the second match as well, helping the USA come back from a two-goal, first-half deficit. Marthell Vazquez and Kevin Hensley both scored to bring the USA level at 2-2, but three minutes after Hensley’s tying goal, Emyle Rudder struck what proved the game winner for England.
The U.S. PNST will hold its next training camp from March 23-30, at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Eligible players interested in finding out more about potentially playing for the team should contact head coach Stuart Sharp at firstname.lastname@example.org.
