Seattle Sounders Head Coach Sigi Schmid Pre-Match Quote Sheet

Pre-Match Quote Sheet:
Seattle Sounders vs. D.C. United
2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final
Sept. 1, 2009

Seattle Sounders Head Coach Sigi Schmid

On what he expects from Wednesday night’s final:
“I think both teams are coming into the game with an attacking mindset and I think the strength of both teams lies in the attacking part of the field. We expect a game that’s going to be entertaining and open.”

On traveling across the country and playing in the unfriendly confines of RFK Stadium:
“Obviously the challenges of playing in D.C. anytime, and we travel, I think, more than any other team in the league, so those are both challenges in and of themselves. D.C. has certainly been a good team at home and they have had a lot of success at home over the years, winning tournaments and championships. It’s a challenge but we’re certainly looking forward to it.”

On what his team brings to the game:
“We bring a clean slate. We haven’t had any negative experiences in championship games, so we want to just build up a positive legacy for our team and we know we have a chance to make some history for our team. Every player knows that and that’s something we want to try and do.”

On how he conveys his past championship experience to players who might be playing in their first final:
“We have some individual players who have played in finals and championships, so I think it’s more important that they can relay their experiences. We have guys like Kasey Keller, Freddy Ljungberg, Tyrone Marshall, Peter Vagenas and players of that caliber who have been able to play there. We have been trying to convey to the players that the game is played the same. The result means a little more, there is more attention played to the outcome, but at the end of the day, you pass, run, shoot and defend, and that part of the game is always the same.”

On how his team’s run through the U.S. Open Cup has helped compliment his team’s league success so far:
“It’s a tremendous accompaniment to what we’ve done in the league. To get to the Open Cup final in our first year is something that we’re very excited about and it helps sustain us in the league as well because it helps the team confidence grow when we can win games. When we won the semifinal, it helped us grow in confidence and let us know that we have the ability to win big games.”
