Kasey Keller Open Cup Quote Sheet

Pre-Match Quote Sheet:
Seattle Sounders vs. D.C. United
2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final
Sept. 1, 2009

Seattle Sounders Goalkeeper KASEY KELLER

On how it feels to be in a cup final after only one year back in the U.S. and the team’s first year in MLS:
“It’s pretty cool. I think it’s great for the organization, and obviously myself, personally. It’s nice anytime you get to a final of any competition, it’s a great honor. I’ve come home to continue to play at the highest level, and it just continues to show that the right choices were made to be able to come home and be able to get in a cup final in the first year with a new team and we feel really great about the accomplishment.”

On the veteran experience he brings to a predominantly young squad going into a championship:
“You just try to explain to them that there are a lot of players around the world, big-name players, that play their whole careers and never make it to cup finals. You never know if you’re ever going to get the chance to play in another one. So while you’re here, make the most out of it, enjoy yourself and give it everything you have to try to win it because you just don’t know if you’ll ever get another chance.”

On the type of matchup he expects against D.C. United tomorrow night:
“D.C.’s been a very attacking team this year, and they’ve scored goals, but they’ve conceded goals. And we’ve been a bit of the opposite; we’ve been a team that’s kept it pretty tight at the back but different times have found it hard to score the goals. So it’ll be interesting to see how the two teams complement each other, or if one team really steps up its game on the day. We drew 3-3 at home; we were up 3-1 late and D.C. came forward and we didn’t handle the pressure well and conceded a couple of goals. So we know they’re a potent offensive team, and we have to be on top of our game defensively.”

On the chance to bring home a trophy to Seattle, which has already established immense support and tradition with their fans in the team’s first year in MLS:
“I think it would be huge. To be able to win the cup, to then have the experience of bringing different CONCACAF teams into our stadium and having that experience for our fan base for next season by winning the cup and qualifying for the CONCACAF Champions League would just be a very cool honor and something that we’re proud of. Winning silverware is winning silverware and to do it at any time is a difficult task for teams, but to do it in your first year as an expansion team would be pretty impressive.”
