U.S. Under-18 WNT Defeats Germany U-19 WNT 1-0 to at Ten Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain

LA MANGA, Spain (March 3, 2010) – The U.S. U-18 Women’s National Team used an own goal to defeat the German U-19 Women’s National Team 1-0 in its second match of the Ten Nations Tournament. The U.S. defeated Sweden 3-1 in its opening match on March 1.

The lone goal came 11 minutes into the game after forward Katie Stengel beat her defender down the left wing, cut the ball back to her right foot just before the end line and then sent a hard cross into the box. German defender Johanna Elsig was retreating towards her own goal and tried to clear, but instead inadvertently miss-hit the ball into her own net.

The win over Germany’s U-19s came on the same day the full U.S. Women’s National Team beat Germany 3-2 in the championship game of the Algarve Cup in Faro, Portugal.

The USA was out-shot 14-3 by the Germans, but got a fine game from goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe who made nine saves on the day. The U.S. U-18s will play one more game at this tournament, taking on Norway U-19s on March 5.

This U-18 roster in Spain does not include players who are in the core group being prepared by U.S. Under-20 head coach Jill Ellis for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany this summer, but all the players are eligible for that team.

The 16 players on the U-18 roster that were born in 1992 or 1993 are still age-eligible for the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, so this tournament will serve as early preparation for that cycle. The other U-19 teams participating in the competition, which basically features three friendly matches for each country, are England, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and Italy.
