Quote Sheet: U.S. U-20 WNT Head Coach Jill Ellis and Forward Sydney Leroux Discuss Draw

U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team Head Coach JILL ELLIS

On the draw:
“I think it’s an exciting draw because these are teams that we haven’t played, it’s a bit of an unknown. That sometimes can be a negative, but for us, it’s a positive because I think we will be very motivated. There are no pre-conceived thoughts about these opponents. We know we have to prepare well and focus on ourselves. They are all very different kinds of teams from different regions and that represent different challenges and different strengths. It will require us to perform very well each game.”

After being asked about winning this tournament in 2008:
“We certainly have a great tradition and history with the U.S. women, but these current players are starting at the same point as all fifteen other teams. They want to leave their mark and win a championship. Every team wants to be playing on the last day, and we are no different, but this U-20 team is a new team, with new goals and new aspirations.”

On Germany as host for the tournament:
“It’s been phenomenal, and the people have been very gracious. The Final Draw was here in Dresden and then we were drawn into this venue for our first two games so we are very pleased. The city is beautiful, the people are energized to host and I’m very excited to be coming back here. Europe has a great history of hosting and putting on world tournaments. The people are passionate for the soccer and I think they will embrace the game regardless of gender.”

On the draw:
“It’s definitely an exciting time for us, but we knew going into the draw that every team we play is going to bring their best game against us, and that’s never going to change. I like the teams we got because it’s going to be a challenge and as a team we are definitely up for a challenge.”

On preparing for the tournament after learning the team's opponents:
“It’s always nice to find out who you will be playing, but it doesn’t change our mentality, our focus or our preparation. We are always going to play hard no matter who we are playing, but now we can start to scout the other teams, figure out their formation and figure out how we are going to play them.”
