U.S. U-20 WNT Defeats New Zealand at The Home Depot Center

CARSON, Calif. (May 13, 2010) – U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team won the first of what will be four international matches during a two-week training camp, defeating the New Zealand U-20 WNT on goals from Sydney Leroux and Courtney Verloo.

Leroux opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the match with her 21st international goal in her 26th U-20 cap. The goal came after a long-range shot from Christine Nairn was pushed away by the Kiwi goalkeeper Victoria Esson to the left of the goal. Leroux collected the ball, turned away from net and pivoted back before roofing a right-footed shot into the goal.

The USA, which out-shot New Zealand 14-4, did not score again until the 58th minute and this one came off a rebound as well. A shot from Vicki DiMartino was knocked down by Esson and it bounced to the feet of Verloo who curled a right-footed shot from 22 yards into the upper right corner of the net. It was Verloo’s first international goal for the U.S. U-20s after scoring 12 in 13 games at the U-17 level.

“I thought we did some pieces of the game quite well,” said U.S. head coach Jill Ellis. “During our pre-game meeting, we talked about getting a good start, so I was pleased with our pressure in the first 15 minutes and we were rewarded with the goal. At this point, it’s about putting all the pieces together so we can play a good ninety minutes. There were some good spells in the game, but I saw some things we can get better at. Runs in the box, service in the box, our shape at times, but these are things we are addressing and the game against New Zealand was very valuable. They are a good opponent, very athletic and gave us a strong challenge.”

The two teams will meet again on Saturday, May 15, at 12 p.m. PT at The HDC. The U.S. team will then travel to San Diego on Sunday, where it will hold a week of training camp at The Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. The USA will then face the Mexico U-20 WNT twice at the OTC, on May 20 and May 22, both at 4 p.m. PT.

The USA, New Zealand and Mexico are all preparing for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in four German cities from July 13-Aug. 1. The USA was drawn into Group D with Ghana, Switzerland and the Korea Republic. New Zealand is in Group B with Brazil, Korea DPR and Sweden while Mexico is in Group C with Japan, Nigeria and England.
