CARSON, Calif. (September 20, 2007) — The U.S. Under-14 Girls’ Development Team rallied from a goal down to tie 2-2 with U-16 Dallas Texans in their first-ever match in the Women’s Nike Friendlies. Alex Doll took advantage of a goalmouth scramble in the 47th minute to give the U-14’s a share of the spoils from a hard-fought match on the “Mooch” Myernick Field at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Despite playing against girls two years older, the U.S. U-14 Girls held their own against the Texans, with the match ending almost even in shots, saves and fouls.
The Texans showed their strength and experience from the outset, nearly grabbing the lead in the 5th minute when a long-range strike from Courtney Smith dinged off the outside of the right post. While continuing to enjoy the better possession, they opened the scoring in the 16th minute after the U.S. failed to clear from their own penalty area. Texans striker Brittany Morgan pounced on the loose ball and made no mistake, deftly curling the ball into the lower left corner.
The U.S. began to settle in, eventually finding a chink in the Texans’ armor through an aerial attack that began near the midfield stripe. U.S. midfielder Jennifer Gonzales spotted Olivia Schultz on the fly and flighted a beautiful ball over the Texans backline. Schultz came streaming into the box and beat goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold to the ball, deftly chipping over the charging ‘keeper to even the score at 1-1.
The tie wouldn’t last long, however, as Dallas took advantage of a free kick from 30 yards out after U.S. goalkeeper Megan Kufeld had raced off her line to thwart a Texans attack and collided with the striker. On the ensuing restart, Morgan let fly a bender over the wall that caromed off the near post and back in front of the goalmouth, where a hovering Lauren Byers easily put home the rebound to re-take the lead for Dallas.
The U.S. picked up the pace from the second-half whistle, quickly snatching the equalizer just two minutes into the second stanza. A delivery from Brittany Von Rueden set up Doll for the strike, her effort mazing through traffic and nicking off the near post before settling into the back of the net.
The action remained steady and even through most of the remaining time, with the U.S. creating two outstanding opportunities just before full time, both from the foot of Lo’eau LaBonta. The midfielder from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., looped a shot from 12 yards out that dipped wide of the far post with two minutes remaining, her final effort a minute later pegged for the upper right corner but gliding just inches wide.
