NOTE: Playing in front of 10,000 fans the USA was in a must-win situation against SC Corinthians (Brazil) in order to advance to the quarterfinals of the Dallas Cup. Knowing that a draw would not advance the USA to the next round, with fifteen minutes left in the match U.S. U-17 Head Coach John Ellinger pushed Greg Martin into midfield, leaving three defenders in the back, to create more pressure and scoring chances. The Corinthians scored in the 90th minute securing a 3-2 victory and knocking the U-17s out of the Dallas Cup. The USA had only two field player substitutes as the team was missing four starters due to injuries and suspensions: Alexander Yi (strained ACL), Oguchi Onweyu (hip-flexor), Seth Trembly (card suspension) and Kyle Beckerman (card suspension). The U-17s will return to Bradenton, Fla. on Friday, April 2, where the team will continue preparations for their May 9 (San Miguel, El Salvador) and May 22 (Columbus, OH) encounter with El-Salvador for the third and final CONCACAF berth in the '99 FIFA U-17 World Championship in New Zealand. The U-17s will travel to Orlando, Fla. on April 9 to play two exhibition games at the Seminole County Sports Training Center. The USA will play Stetson University on April 9 and Clemson University on April 10.
