SANFORD, Fla. (Wednesday, January 1, 2003) - The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team got 2003 off to the right start today, thanks to 15-year-old midfielder Danny Szetela. Szetela scored the game’s only goal in the 48th minute, giving the U.S. a 1-0 win over AC Milan’s Under-17 squad at Sylvan Lake Park in Sanford, Fla.
The U.S. side played without many of their regular players, as 19 of the 30 players in residency this past fall were with their regional teams, leaving John Ellinger a chance to look at some of his younger players as well as some newer faces.
Ellinger’s squad had the better of the play, outshooting Milan 5-2 and forcing the Italian goalkeeper into four saves. U.S. goalkeeper Quentin Westberg recorded his first shutout of 2003, needing only to make two saves on the day.
The U.S. started the game with many of their familiar faces on the bench, but a mass substitution in the game’s 31st minute saw seven players enter the game for the U.S., including Freddy Adu, Brian Mascarenas, Guillermo Gonzalez, Eddie Gaven and Szetela.
The Under-17s will regroup at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., on January 6. The team will then begin final preparations for the CONCACAF Qualifying tournament that will take place in early March in Guatemala.
