The tone of the game was set early by the Texans, who played hard and battled for every possession. Their aggressiveness got the best of them though as they collected 5 yellow cards and 2 ejections in the first half.
While still at full strength, the Texans got two goals off of free kicks from nearby positions on the right side of the U.S. goal to go up 2-0. In the 33rd minute the Texans got on the board first off their first set play. U.S. keeper Stephen Sandbo came out to snatch the free kick, but it was flicked to the far post by a Texans player to a waiting Riley Trostel, who knocked the ball in for the 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, the Texans struck again, as their free kick was headed out of the penalty area by the U.S. only to fall to Texans defender Craig Mcminimy, who hit a left-footed strike past a helpless Sandbo.
After the second goal, the U.S. began to get more chances on the Texans’ end, finally winning a penalty kick for a tackle from behind on Tim Ward, as he ran onto a ball in the penalty box. The foul propelled the referee to give Texans forward Bruno Guarda a yellow card, his second of the match, sending him off and leaving the Texans with only ten men to play for the rest of the game. Bradley knocked home the penalty to cut the U.S. deficit in half before halftime.
The Texans went down to just nine players two minutes before halftime as Texan forward Paulo Da Silva was given a straight red for a spikes-up tackle on Steve Curfman after he had gotten rid of the ball from his defensive position.
In the second half, the U.S. had a bit of déjà vu, getting another penalty kick after a Texan defender took down Ward in the penalty area for the second time. Bradley again slotted home the penalty, giving the U.S. the much anticipated equalizer.
In the 67th minute, a handball was called on the Texans just outside their penalty area and the U.S. seized the opportunity to take their first lead of the game. Jimenez curved the free kick over the 6-man Texans wall and into the left side of the goal, just beyond the goalkeeper’s grasp.
The lead was short-lived though as three minutes later U.S. midfielder Danny Szetela, fighting through a sore groin, was called for a handball as he tried to collect the ball in the U.S. penalty area. Texans midfielder Daniel Antunez placed it past Sandbo for the final goal of the game.
The U.S. Under-16 Men’s National Team plays Palo Alto Gold Crew on Tuesday at 12 p.m. CT before closing out group play against Yahara United Premier (Wisconsin) on Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT. Earlier in the day, Yahara beat Palo Alto 1-0. Also, on Sunday, Yahara lost 7-3 to the Dallas Texans.
