The U.S. Under-17 ’88 Men’s National Team fell to England 3-1 in a cold, wet match this afternoon at the Montaigu Tournament in Montaigu, France. The U.S. will play its final Group A match against Ivory Coast on Saturday, April 10.
The loss puts the U.S. in last place of their group with one point.
The U.S. jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the second half on a goal by forward Preston Zimmerman, his first goal since being called into Residency just a few weeks ago. The play started with midfiedler Ryan Soroka who put Michael Balogun into space on the right flank. Balogun collected the ball and sprinted down the sideline before serving in a cross to the far post that Zimmerman was able to head home for the lead in the 47th minute.
The U.S. didn’t keep the lead long as England scored three minutes later to knot the game at 1-1. Balogun went down in the U.S. defensive third after getting cleated on a tough challenge, but England did not kick it out and continued to play. About 45 second later, an English midfielder played a ball down the right flank, where Balogun was still down, finding Myles Weston, who dribbled in on goal and finished past ‘keeper Bryant Rueckner.
After England’s equalizer, the U.S. was never able to recover. In the 65th minute, England took the lead when second-half substitute Jamie Mullan got loose on the left sideline and served in a pin-point cross to Joseph Garner at the back post for a header past the outstretched Rueckner.
Two minutes later, England put it away with another tally, this time coming out of a free kick. The ball was pushed to the top of the box where a nice give-and-go with Lewis McGugan sent Darryl Knights through on goal and he finished to the lower left post.
