U-17s Bounce Back to Defeat U-19 Irvine Strikers 1-0
CHICAGO (June 1, 2004) - The U.S. Under-17 ’88 Men’s National Team bounced back from a 4-0 drubbing against the three-year older U-19 Irvine Strikers and was able to register a 1-0 victory on Saturday against the same team at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The U.S. Under-17 ’88 Men’s National Team bounced back from a 4-0 drubbing against the three-year older U-19 Irvine Strikers and was able to register a 1-0 victory on Saturday against the same team at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
The U.S. was well organized on defense and creative up top as they were able to generate a number of chances on goal, but struggled to get it past goalkeeper Jason Del Valle and after the first 45 minutes of play the teams were in a scoreless tie.
The second half saw a complete new line-up for the U.S. as head coach John Ellinger inserted seven of the players he is taking a look at this week to possibly bolster the U-17 roster as he prepares for world championship qualfying next year.
In the 77th minute, David Arvizu was able to snap the tie and get the game-winner for the U.S. as he made a nifty run to get behind Irvine’s defense and Ryan Soroka put him through. He collected the ball, cut to his right and ripped a shot into the upper-right of the goal.
In the final ten minutes, Irvine had some opportunities on goal, but goalkeeper Bryant Rueckner was able to keep a clean sheet and pick up the shutout.
