CARSON, California (Oct. 8, 2007) - Jack McInerney scored a hat trick to lead the U.S. Under-17 '92 Men's National Team to a 7-0 victory against the Richmond Kickers in one of the final two matches during U.S. Soccer's Development Academy Program Fall Showcase at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
McInerney began his three-goal barrage in the 13th minute when he received the ball from Edson Lemus, dribbled past his lone defender and then the goalkeeper before pushing the ball into the open net.
Thirteen minutes later, the U.S. doubled their lead when Stefan Jerome finished off a spectacular individual effort. The forward ran down a the ball deep in the left corner of the field, turned to beat his defender and then dribbled along the endline before unleashing a blistering strike past the helpless 'keeper into the far side netting.
Ten minutes after halftime, Richmond had its best chance of the match when U.S. goalkeeper Brian Sylestre whiffed on a back pass near the top of the box. Forward Jordan Boothe collected the loose ball, cut to his left and then put a low shot on goal, but defender Chase Miller did well to get back in front of the open net and clear the shot off the line.
A minute after escaping danger, the U.S. began a five-goal barrage as they overpowered the Strikers for the rest of the match. Andrew Craven got free down the right side and served in a cross to the back post for McInerney who's header was saved by the 'keeper, but the ball defelected directly into the path of Lemus and he headed it into the open net.
McInerney tallied the next two goals in a four-minute span to earn his first ever hat trick with the U.S. U-17s. In the 59th minute, he collected the ball 35 yards out and defeated two defenders before hitting it low past the 'keeper into the left corner. In a similar sequence three minutes later, he got past a couple defenders and then the 'keeper, pushing the ball into the open net.
Moments later in the 63rd minute, Craven got into the action when he ripped a shot from the top of the box that the goalkeeper got a piece of, but couldn't stop from finding its way into the net.
The final goal came in the 74th minute with a bit of creative flair. Jerome dribbled into the left side of the penalty area, stopped the ball dead to let his defender fly by and then calmly curled his shot past the 'keeper into the right side.
