Cabrera to Lead 20 Players to Argentina in Preparation for CONCACAF U-17 Championship
The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team will continue preparation for the 2009 CONCACAF U-17 Championship with a trip from March 20-31 to Buenos Aires. During the trip the U.S. will play include three international friendlies.

The U.S. will face Bolivia on March 23, Argentina on March 25 and Uruguay on March 27, all in Buenos Aires. The three international matches in five days will mirror the team’s schedule at the regional championship, which will be held from April 21-May 2 in Tijuana, Mexico. The trip to will be the final foreign training camp for Wilmer Cabrera’s squad before departing for Mexico.
The U.S. U-17s are coming off of a win and a draw against another South American side, Venezuela, who recently made a trip to Bradenton, Fla. The U.S. earned a 0-0 draw on March 12 behind a shutout performance from U.S. goalkeeper Spencer Richey. Two days later, the U.S. earned a 2-0 win, with goals from Marlon Duran and Luis Gil and a shutout from Earl Edwards.
Cabrera’s squad will open its regional campaign against Cuba on April 21 at 4 p.m. local time (7 p.m. ET) at Estadio Caliente. The U.S. will play Canada on April 23 and round out Group A play against Honduras on April 25 with both games also slated for 4 p.m. local time. Should the U.S. advance out of their group, they will cross over to play one of the top two teams from Group B, which is made up of Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago, in the semifinals.
Four teams from CONCACAF will travel to the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, which means progression to the semifinals in Tijuana will be enough to secure a berth to the tournament. The 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup will be held in Nigeria from Oct. 24-Nov. 16.
Cabrera will be at the helm of his first qualifying tournament, and will attempt to continue the U.S. streak of being the only team to qualify for every FIFA event at this age level.
