TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 24, 2010) -- The U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team topped regional foe Mexico by a score of 4-1, putting on a dominating performance at Raymond James Stadium as part of a double header with the U.S. Men’s National Team. The young American used two goals from Kellen Gulley and one each from Alejandro Guido and Marc Pelosi along with a tenacious defensive effort in the victory.
Gulley opened the scoring in the 25th minute, taking advantage of a poorly weighted back pass from a Mexico defender toward his goalkeeper, intercepting the pass and calmly finishing his one-on-one opportunity.
With the score 1-0, the U.S. picked up its pressure looking for more. Kellen Gulley received a ball in the box, and was taken down while trying to turn on his defender, drawing a penalty. Alejandro Guido stepped up and fired his spot kick low and to the left to double the U.S. lead.
Just six minutes into the second half, Mexico pulled back to within a goal after winning a penalty of their own. Giovanny Casillas drew the foul inside the box and Jorge Espericueta took advantage of the 12-yard shot to make it 2-1.
The U.S. would soon get it back to a two-goal lead through another opportunistic finish from Gulley. A ball slipped through a Mexico defender and Gulley pounced on his mistake, first outmuscling him and then finishing a low shot just inside the right post.
The Americans rounded out the scoring following a nice attacking sequence. Mario Rodriguez fought through a pair of defenders and found Takuya Okada at the edge of the box. Okada slotted the ball across for Pelosi, who found the back of the net.
