U.S. Under-17 MNT Beats Canada 2-1, Can Clinch 2012 AGS Cup Championship with Next Win

The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team registered two first-half goals on its way to defeating Canada 2-1 in the AGS Cup on Thursday. The win sets up a showdown against CONCACAF rival Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 6, in which the winner will be crowned champion of the tournament.

BENIDORM, Spain (Oct. 4, 2012) – The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team registered two first-half goals on its way to defeating Canada 2-1 in the AGS Cup on Thursday. The win sets up a showdown against CONCACAF rival Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 6, in which the winner will be crowned champion of the tournament.

The U.S. came in second place last year behind Mexico.

Ahinga Selemani opened the scoring for the U-17 MNT in the 19^th minute and forward Alan Winn doubled the lead just before halftime, giving the U.S. all it would need to hold off Canada.

Andrew Gordon, a 15-year-old forward who entered the match in the 60^th minute, scored for Canada in the 72^nd minute, but the U.S. was able to deny an equalizer to set up the championship showdown against Mexico.

Azerbaijan is also in contention for the championship. If the U.S. match against Mexico ends in a draw and Azerbaijan beats Morocco on Saturday, then Azerbaijan will be the champion. If Azerbaijan loses or ties and the U.S. and Mexico tie, then Mexico is the champion.

The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team squares off against Mexico, a team it has faced three times this year, at 12:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 6, while Azerbaijan faces Morocco at 10 a.m. ET.
